Look up: Sky's the Limit with Globe Observer
Friday March 7, 2025 10:30am - 11:15am EST
Have you ever noticed how the clouds change depending on the weather conditions?

Well, in this interactive and engaging session, you will be introduced to the Globe Observer App, which is a new tool created by NASA Langley researchers. The Globe Observer app allows you and your students to capture cloud cover, in real-time, and collect data that will be sent directly to NASA for analysis. But wait, there's more! NASA will email you a response, with their current satellite data and your students will be able to analyze and compare the images you captured to NASA's.

Before we dive into the Globe Observer app, we will get groovy with the "Cloud Dance" to refresh our memory of the three types of clouds. Then, to prepare for the next portion of the session, I will provide a brief overview of how to utilize the app and capture the best images without obstructing views.

Each participant or group will be provided an iPad with the Globe Observer app and we will proceed outside to capture images of the sky. Our outside adventure and discussion will be focused on the following question: what type of clouds do we notice and how will they impact the weather conditions?

Once we return inside, we will have a discussion about what we observed and how we could implement the Globe Observer app and other NASA resources in our own class.

Mardi Gras Coding Carnival: Unplugged Activities for Computational Thinking
Friday March 7, 2025 12:30pm - 1:15pm EST
In the spirit of Mardi Gras, this lively and interactive session will immerse participants in a vibrant "Coding Carnival." Attendees will take part in a series of unplugged coding activities using everyday materials such as decks of cards and simple toys—just like the colorful trinkets and playful elements of a Mardi Gras parade! These hands-on activities integrate physical movement with coding patterns, transforming the session into a festive celebration of critical thinking, computational thinking, and problem-solving.
The presenter will demonstrate how each unplugged coding activity can be adapted to various skill levels, allowing participants to adjust the "floats" in their coding parade—whether they're beginners or seasoned tech enthusiasts. Through the Mardi Gras theme, we will also explore the “how and why” of coding, helping participants understand how these unplugged activities lead to stronger digital coding skills.
The session will culminate in a collaborative “Brainstorm Bead Toss,” where participants will exchange and develop new ideas, similar to the way Mardi Gras participants share and celebrate their creativity. This concluding activity will encourage educators to design their own unplugged coding activities that they can bring back to their classrooms, spreading the Mardi Gras coding spirit.
